On 8 December 2025, New Zealand formally amended the Trade Marks (International
Registration) Regulations 2012, permitting trademark owners to partially replace their
national trademark registrations in New Zealand with international registrations under the
Madrid System.
Previously, New Zealand only allowed full replacement of national trademarks. Under the
new rule, trademark holders may replace their existing national registration with an international
registration for selected goods or services only, provided that: the trademark itself is identical,
the owner is the same, and the international registration covers the relevant goods and services.
This reform simplifies trademark portfolio management for global brands in New Zealand,
effectively reduces renewal and maintenance costs, and better aligns with the trademark strategy
needs of multinational enterprises.
